The plural pronoun in the quote is a little ambiguous but I assume it refers to the UKIPpers. Perhaps the other "they" have accepted his nomination onto the Committee to highlight his ignorance, neuter his opposition and give him an opportunity to learn - although perhaps not the best week to trudge out "Education, Education, Education".
