On Liberty

Ed Joyce, on Liberal Vision, points out that the same year in which the Origin of Species was published, 1859, also saw the appearance of John Stuart Mill's "On Liberty".

He selects the following apposite quotation:

“… the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not sufficient warrant.”
