Extending Peter Black's metaphor, so are the lapdogs, but guide dogs, sniffer dogs and St Bernards are for the chop. Although politicians routinely deprecate such programmes as Today and the Andrew Marr Show, and complain that the likes of Marr and Kuenssberg are biased, they really love the exposure such shows give them. What they do not like are the journalistic exposes which Newsnight and Panorama often do well. Nor do they believe the Great British Public needs detailed independent news coverage - media releases from their parties' PR departments provide all they need. So there will be muted complaints from Westminster about the BBC's latest rounds of cuts.
